A beautiful vintage tapestry made by hand in the 40's and 50's
Young Girl Reading, or French Reader (La Liseuse), is an 18th-century oil painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard. She depicts an unidentified girl in profile, wearing a lemon yellow dress with a white collar and cuffs and purple ribbons, and reads from a booklet held in her right hand. The painting is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
The painting shows an unidentified girl wearing a lemon yellow dress with a white collar and cuffs and purple ribbons. The subject is depicted in profile, reading from a booklet held in his right hand, sitting with his left arm on a wooden rail and his back supported by a large lilac pillow supported by a wall. Her hair is tied in a bun with a purple ribbon, and her face and dress are lit in front of her, casting a shadow on the wall behind her. Fragonard pays special attention to the face, but uses a lighter brush on the dress and pillow, and the sleeve has been scratched in the paint with the end of a brush. The horizontal line of the armrest and a vertical line between two unadorned walls provide a sense of space and structure.
