Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg photo
Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg (October 2, 1847 in Posen, † August 2, 1934 in Gut Neudeck, East Prussia) was a German marshal and politician. During World War I, the Supreme Command of the Army, which he led, exercised de facto dictatorial power from 1916 to 1918. Hindenburg was elected the second Reich President of the Weimar Republic in 1925. He was re-elected President of the Reich in 1932 and remained in office until his death.
After repeatedly rejecting the Nazi Adolf Hitler as head of government, he was appointed Chancellor of the Reich on January 30, 1933. Hindenburg later allowed Hitler to turn Germany into a dictatorship (the so-called takeover). Hindenburg's motives are still controversial today.
